British Mother Dies After Spain Wildfire as Partner Remains in Critical Condition

The couple had been staying near the hillside town of Bédar when the wildfire spread rapidly through the region. Emergency services found them critically injured the following morning after searching the affected area.

The Almería wildfire claimed at least 13 lives, making it the deadliest wildfire in the history of Andalusia and one of the most fatal recorded in Spain.

Among those who died were four other British nationals who were found inside a burnt-out vehicle after attempting to escape the fire. A 93-year-old British woman also later died in hospital after suffering injuries in the blaze.

Family members travelled to Spain to remain by Lisa and Simon's bedside during their treatment.

Lisa's son, Alfie, paid tribute to his mother following her death, describing her as "the best person ever" and saying he would "forever love" her and cherish every memory they shared.

A spokesperson for the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office said:

"We are supporting the family of a British woman who has died in Spain and are in contact with the local authorities."

A fundraising campaign established by relatives has raised more than £65,000 to help cover expenses not met by insurance, including ongoing medical costs and funeral arrangements.

Family members have also asked for continued support and prayers as Simon Batchelor remains in a critical condition.

The wildfire swept across the Almería province on 9 July, destroying large areas of countryside and prompting the evacuation of more than 1,300 people.

Authorities confirmed at least 13 people died and 17 others were injured.

Spanish officials have not confirmed the cause of the fire. However, witnesses reported seeing a power line fall before flames rapidly spread into nearby vegetation.

Following the disaster, Andalusia's Health Minister said several victims had attempted to leave the area using routes that differed from those recommended by emergency services, with some becoming trapped as the fire intensified.

Investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the wildfire.
