Joanna Whaley Wins Democratic Primary in Bid to Become Michigan's First Transgender State Legislator
Former pastor secures primary victory and is now set to contest the November election for a seat in Michigan's state legislature.

Joanna Whaley has won the Democratic primary for Michigan's 2nd House District, moving one step closer to becoming the first openly transgender person elected to the state's legislature.
Whaley defeated former state representative Frank Liberati and fellow candidate Gary Schlack in Tuesday's primary election. The district is widely regarded as a Democratic stronghold, giving her a strong opportunity ahead of November's general election.
She will now face Republican candidate Ronald Kokinda in the race for the state House seat.

Before entering politics, Whaley spent many years working as a pastor at an evangelical megachurch.
She has previously spoken publicly about her experiences of questioning her gender identity while working within the church, saying she underwent years of conversion practices before eventually leaving ministry in 2022.
Following her departure, Whaley became a hospital chaplain, worked with progressive faith communities and launched a podcast discussing faith, identity and public life.
Her campaign has focused on issues including the economy, healthcare and community support.
Whaley's campaign has attracted national attention because of the historic nature of her candidacy.
Earlier this year, a legal challenge was made over her place on the ballot following a previous name change, but election officials ruled that her paperwork met all legal requirements.
She has received endorsements from several political and advocacy organisations and has said she understands the significance her campaign holds for many transgender people.
Whaley has previously said she hopes her campaign demonstrates that more people from different backgrounds can take part in public service.
